Here comes another interview from our Frontend department.

Read the story of Stanislav Holub, a Frontend Developer who started working at Netguru in October 2020.

This is a series of interviews with our developers who would like to contribute to our culture of knowledge sharing. Read more in the article below.

Do you have any experience before NG? If so, tell us about what you have been doing before Netguru.

My previous experience was at Luxoft as a Web Developer. I applied for a Frontend Developer position, but I had some knowledge about databases and a little about backend development, so I landed in a project for Siemens Financial Services. I implemented modules for a financial platform from scratch and developed new features for existing functionalities using Angular with a custom UI framework. For the backend, we initially used Node but moved it gradually to an ASP.NET Web API.

Before Luxoft, I had another programming job, but it wasn’t strictly a programming position and was limited to writing SQL queries and new features using Object Pascal.

What are the projects you have experienced so far at Netguru?

Until now, I only had short-term assignments, such as Foodetective and a few other projects. I also worked on the PlatformOS research project. Now I’m joining the Australian fintech project, and I’m excited about it!

What’s your favorite technology, and why?

JavaScript, of course :)

But if we are talking about JS frameworks, it would be hard to decide which I like the most. My previous professional experience was with Angular. I had some unpleasant feelings while getting familiar with it, but I found myself loving the way everything is organized after a few months. My frontend journey started with React. For now, I’m very interested in continuing to develop in that direction (‘cause React devs are more popular than Angular devs, it seems to me :D). So, I would say React, at least for now.

What would you like to learn in the next 12 months?

First and foremost, I’m going to develop in-depth knowledge about trendy frontend technologies, such as Next, Gatsby, etc. Aside from that, I want to learn about Machine Learning, at least enough to be able to participate in discussions.

What do you consider to be your most significant learning up to date (success or failure)?

Don’t lose too much time trying to solve something all alone - somebody has probably already had a similar problem.

Talk to people, don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Plan, then do.

Do not overthink, don’t try to solve every problem in the world with the next line of code. Work smart, not hard.

How do you grow yourself outside Netguru and what would you recommend to others (books, podcasts, courses, platforms, vlogs, etc.)?

I like to talk with other people on technology-related topics, including but not limited to web development, but also development in general.

Also, a large part of my growth was watching YouTube videos:

Reading books:

  • You Don’t Know JS
  • Clean Code
  • Grokking Algorithms: An Illustrated Guide for Programmers and Other Curious People

And most of all - courses on Udemy and O’Reilly.
