The client
Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany runs its Life Science business as MilliporeSigma in the US and Canada: more than 28,000 employees, over 55 manufacturing and testing sites worldwide, and upwards of 300,000 products across scientific discovery, biomanufacturing and testing services.
This project relates to Sigma-Aldrich’s work in the growing legal cannabis industry in North America.
The challengeWhat the teams actually needed
Reliable certification data is hard to come by in the North American cannabis market, where standards lag well behind those in food and product quality suffers for it.
Challenge 01Certificates that can be altered
Certificates of Analysis needed a tamper-proof route between growers, labs and processors, closing off manipulation and the doubtful quality that follows it.
Challenge 02Rules that change at the state line
Legal restrictions vary between states, so the platform had to adapt rather than assume one regime.
Challenge 03Regulation still coming
The build had to anticipate FDA regulation that had not arrived yet, and satisfy C-level review with documentation of every part before release.
What we did
Certificates of Analysis, exchanged on a tamper-proof record
CertForward is a blockchain-powered web platform for receiving, uploading and sharing Certificates of Analysis securely — something growers, laboratories and processors can all trust, aiming to bring food-market standards into the cannabis market.
MVP defined before the clock started
The first step set the MVP scope, the action plan and the initial designs, against a firm four-month timeline.
A trimmed-down product that works
Registration and login, a contacts system, subscriptions and payments, profile and user management, certificate handling on the blockchain, and a dashboard to see it from.
Written down for the review
Each part of the project was documented in detail, giving C-level leadership a transparent view before anything was released.
Still being extended
Development continues with new features and integrations, and the platform is distributed through MilliporeSigma’s own marketing channels.
